CONTOUR: NOG TOT DE BLADEREN VALLEN
De zomer van 2009 is van een uitzonderlijk niveau. Dat kan u ervan weerhouden hebben om binnenskamers te gaan kijken naar hedendaagse kunst van een zeer hoog niveau.
Geen nood, u heeft tot zondag 18 oktober om de eventuele schade in te halen. Er zijn bovendien nog een aantal speciale data die een bezoek extra aantrekkelijk maken.

zondag 13 september
Twee locaties van Contour - Huis De Lombaard en Figurentheater DE MAAN – zitten in het parcours van de Open Monumentendag en zijn gratis toegankelijk. -
zaterdag 19 september
Contour sluit aan bij UiTKIJKER, de nieuwe Mechelse vrijetijdsbeurs. -
zaterdag 3 oktober
Een jonge dag in samenwerking met H30 (artistieke werkplek voor jonge mensen), CJP en Opa Malyn (filmavond eindwerken bewegend beeld). -
zaterdag 17 + zondag 18 oktober
In het slotweekend van Contour vindt de PopCOrNTOUR plaats in samenwerking met Mechelen Kinderstad. Er zijn tal van extra activiteiten op maat van kinderen en hun ouders.
Op zondag 18 oktober sluit de finissage van Contour naadloos aan bij de vernissage van de
expo van Johan Grimonprez en Pieter Geenen, een project van bkSM (beeldende kunst Strombeek/Mechelen) in De Garage in Mechelen.
In galerie Transit vindt die dag de opening van The Transient Body van Luc Dondeyne plaats. Contour en The People’s Cinema tonen
als afsluiter de film Just One Kiss van Sami Van Ingen in het auditorium van het Mechelse cultuurcentrum.

CONTOUR, HIP EN HISTORISCH
Televisie is een logische bondgenoot van een biënnale voor bewegend beeld. De aandacht durft soms uit een eerder onverwachte hoek te komen.
Op zaterdag 5 september brengt Vlaanderen Vakantieland (één, 18.10) de reportage ‘Mechelen, hip en historisch’. Contour komt daarin uitvoerig aan bod.
Logisch misschien: het toont hedendaagse kunst (hip) in gebouwen met een verleden (historisch). Er zijn gesprekken met curator Katerina Gregos en kunstenaar Vincent Meessen en je krijgt een mooi beeld van de werken en de locaties.
De reportage wordt heruitgezonden op zondag 6 september om 14.00.
Kijken! En daarna komen kijken.
HOOR HET EENS VAN EEN ANDER
Contour wordt gewikt en gewogen door de pers. En krijgt goede cijfers.
De expo wordt onder meer aanbevolen door Focus Knack en HUMO en krijgt uitgebreid aandacht van de landelijke kranten en de buitenlandse kunstpers.
De volgende weken komt Contour nog in beeld op ‘Vlaanderen Vakantieland’ (één – zie hierboven) en ‘50° Nord’ (Arte-RTBF).
Een kleine bloemlezing uit de reacties.
Veruit het meest verbluffende werk is ‘The Ship Of Fools’ van Julian Rosefeldt.
Het is een monumentale installatie met vier schermen waarop gelijktijdig vier films worden geprojecteerd.
Het geheel is van een sublieme schoonheid.
– DE STANDAARD
Het 8,5 minuten durende filmpje ‘Taking Turns’ van Michaël Borremans is op zich al de omweg naar Contour waard.
– DE TIJD
Het indrukwekkendste werk komt van Eija-Liisa Ahtila, de Finse kunstenares die het Franse koloniale verleden in Algerije in een film vol schuldgevoel giet.

CONTOUR OP VERPLAATSING
Contour speelt ook op verplaatsing. De expo 'Variation: Past Imperfect' in de Beursschouwburg (Brussel) is een verlengstuk van de expo. Curator Katerina Gregos selecteerde werk van 8 nationale en internationale film- en videokunstenaars. Het is van 7 tot 11 september te zien in de Beursschouwburg in het kader van het European Media Event (EME) 2009.
De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn Lene Berg, Marina Gioti, Jasper Rigole, Yorgos Sapountzis, Zin Taylor, Rebecca Ann Tess, Angel Vergara en T.J. Wilcox. 'Variation' verloopt in samenwerking met The People’s Cinema.

The summer of 2009 has been exceptional so far, weather-wise. This may have prevented you from venturing indoors to view fine contemporary art!
Not to worry, you have until Sunday 18 October to set things straight. Moreover, there are a number of special dates on which visits are extra attractive.

Sunday 13 September
Two of Contour’s venues - Huis De Lombaard and Figurentheater DE MAAN – are included in Heritage Open Day and allow free access on that day. -
Saturday 19 September
Contour joins UiTKIJKER, Mechelen's new leisure show. -
Saturday 3 October
A young day in collaboration with H30 (art workshop for young people), CJP and Opa Malyn (film evening with final projects moving image). -
Saturday 17 + Sunday 18 October
PopCOrNTOUR will take place during Contour's closing weekend, in collaboration with Mechelen Kinderstad. This weekend features many extra activities for children and their parents.
On Sunday 18 October there is a seamless transition from Contour's 'finissage' to the vernissage of the exhibitions
by Johan Grimonprez and Pieter Geenen, a project of bkSM (beeldende kunst Strombeek/Mechelen) in De Garage in Mechelen.
That day the opening of The Transient Body by Luc Dondeyne will take place in Galerij Transit.

CONTOUR: HIP AND HISTORICAL
Television is an obvious partner for a biennial of the moving image. But sometimes media attention comes from some rather unexpected source.
On Saturday 5 September Vlaanderen Vakantieland (on Eén, 18.10) features 'Mechelen, hip and historical’. In this programme special attention will be given to Contour.
That may be self-evident: Contours presents contemporary art (hip) in buildings with a past (historical). The programme includes interviews with curator Katerina Gregos and artist Vincent Meessen, and presents an overview of the works of art as well as the locations.
A repeat will be broadcast on Sunday 6 September at 14.00.

FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH
The critics have been to Contour too. And they are positive in their comments.
The exhibition was recommended by Focus Knack and HUMO, to name just two. Many national newspapers and the foreign art press have also covered Contour extensively.
The following weeks Contour will appear in ‘Vlaanderen Vakantieland’ (Eén – see above ) and ‘50° Nord’ (Arte-RTBF).

By far the most astounding work is ‘The Ship Of Fools’ by Julian Rosefeldt.
It is a monumental installation with four screens showing four films simultaneously. In its entirety, it is of a superb beauty.

The most impressive work is created by Eija-Lisa Ahtila, the Finnish artist who depicts the French colonial past in Algeria in a guilt-laden film.

The series of beautiful or stimulating discoveries frequently offered by this Biennial, takes us far beyond the ridiculous ‘end of history’,
so dear to Fukuyama. History is inspiring us, as always, in the innermost intimacy of our lives.

Contour will also tour the country. The exhibition 'Variation: Past Imperfect' in the Beursschouwburg (Brussels) is an extension of Contour. Curator Katerina Gregos has selected works by 8 national and international film and video artists. The exhibition will be held from 7 to 11 September in the Beursschouwburg within the framework of European Media Event (EME) 2009.
