4de EDITIE VAN CONTOUR IN MECHELEN (15.08 > 18.10.09)
Van 15 augustus tot 18 oktober vindt in Mechelen de vierde editie plaats van Contour.
De biënnale voor bewegend beeld presenteert film, video en installaties van beeldende kunstenaars
van internationaal niveau. Ze tonen nieuw of heel recent werk dat wordt ingebed
in bijzondere ruimtes in de historische binnenstad van Mechelen (BEL).
Een artistieke stadstocht die uniek is in Europa.
KATERINA GREGOS CURATOR
Contour nodigt tweejaarlijks een andere curator uit. Dat geeft elke editie een eigen gezicht en dynamiek. In 2009 zorgt Katerina Gregos (GRC) voor de artistieke invulling. Ze is curator, publicist en woont in Brussel.
BEKEND EN BELOFTEVOL UIT BINNENLAND EN BUITENLAND
Een constante van Contour is het goede evenwicht tussen bekende en beloftevolle namen en tussen binnenland en buitenland.

Contour 2009 herdenkt 1989. Het jaar van de val van de Berliijnse muur. Sindsdien lijkt alles sneller te gaan,
lijkt alles méér en vluchtiger te worden. Curator Katerina Gregos: "We geloven dat het verleden ons niets te leren heeft.
Daarom is het geen toeval dat een groeiend aantal kunstenaars bezig is met noties als tijd, geheugen en herinnering".
Gregos kiest Hidden In Remembrance Is The Silent Memory Of Our Future als leidraad.
Contour 2009 gaat over de manier waarop we de geschiedenis vertellen. De kunstenaars prikkelen de historische
gevoeligheid die nodig is om te begrijpen wie we zijn en waar we naartoe gaan. Ze onderzoeken de
vaak on(be)grijpbare verwevingen tussen vroeger en vandaag.
CANVAS BRENGT PORTRET MICHAËL BORREMANS
De tekeningen en schilderijen van Michaël Borremans zijn te vinden in alle belangrijke musea en collecties over de hele wereld.
Zijn werk is intussen uitgebreid met films die aan tableaux vivants laten denken. Tijdens Contour 2009 is de Belgische première
te zien van 'Taking Turns', een prent over twee identieke vrouwelijke figuren die in een donkere, beklemmende ruimte wonen.
Canvas brengt een indringend portret van de Belgische topkunstenaar op zondag 17 mei (21:30) in het programma Goudvis.
Er is een herhaling op zaterdag 23 mei (13:30).

4TH EDITION CONTOUR IN MECHELEN (15.08.2009 > 18.10.2009)
From 15 August until 18 October the fourth edition of Contour will
take place in Mechelen.
This biennial of moving image presents films, videos and installations
by visual artists at an international level. The artists present newly
commissioned or very recent work, in unique venues in the historical
city centre of Mechelen (BEL).
A contemporary artistic city tour that is unique in Europe.

For each biennial, Contour invites a new curator to formulate a vision. As a result, each edition has its own unique character and dynamics. In 2009 Katerina Gregos is responsible for the artistic content. Gregos is a curator and writer based in Brussels.

A defining aspect of Contour is the balance between established and
emerging artists, Belgian as well as foreign.

CONSIDERING HISTORY
Contour 2009 takes place twenty years after the fall of the Berlin
wall, a timely moment to consider recent history. Since then
developments occur at a more accelerated pace. According to curator
Katerina Gregos: "We are at a point where we believe that the past
cannot teach us anything, which is a very precarious view. It is now
more urgent to negotiate the present through an understanding of the
past than ever before. This is also evident in the work of a growing
number of artists whose work mines history and explores notions such
as time, memory and remembrance".
Contour 2009 which is entitled "Hidden in Remembrance is the Silent
Memory of our Future", will revolve around questions of historical
representation and historiography. It will explore how historical
narratives are constructed, and will highlight the complex and often
persisting entanglements between past, present and future. The artists
in Contour 09 aim to demonstrate how the residue of history affects
our perception of the present as well as our visions of the future.
CANVAS TV PRESENTS A PORTRAIT OF MICHAËL BORREMANS
The drawings and paintings of Michaël Borremans can be found in major
museums and collections internationally. Lately the artist has also
been making evocative films that resemble tableaux vivants.
Contour 2009 will feature the Belgian premiere of Borremans’ latest
film, 'Taking Turns', a haunting work that focuses on two identical
female figures, who inhabit a dark, oppressive space.
On Sunday 17 May (21:30) in Goudvis, Canvas will present a probing
portrait of this important Belgian artist. The programme will be
repeated on Saturday 23 May (13:30).
